Oh so Coconutty!

The first thing that came to mind when I began hearing about coconut oil was oh great here’s another fly by night beauty product, and I’ll pass on checking this one out…meh! Unfortunately I couldn’t escape it, so I figured ok the Beauty Gods have spoken and I’m being subconsciously coerced into see what all the coconutty hype is about. I was knocking it before I tried it, then BAM the coconut oil gates opened and I begrudgingly walked through (que the bright lights, and slow music) only to find that there are endless health and beauty benefits to this amazing oily goodness! Since sharing is caring I thought I’d let all of my Lavish Lovers in on a few of the advantages.

1. Au Naturale for my Naturalistas – this amazing oil is naturally antibacterial and antifungal, as well as an excellent moisturizer that can penetrate your beautiful hair better than most other oils. How organically organic right!? With using organic products, as well as eating clean, and the many other new ways to be more health conscious you should go ahead and add this to your daily regimen. I promise you will be asking yourselves “ Is there anything more luscious than coconut oil?”

2.  Unconditional Love – since we’re already talking about how excellent of a moisturizer coconut oil is, keep following me into the light! There are a lot of conditioners that contain coconut oil, it’s better able to penetrate hair and prevent protein loss than mineral and sunflower oil according to research. It’s one of those amazing gems that you can use on almost anything, kinda reminded me of olive oil and it’s many uses (cooking, skin, hair). Give those tresses some lovin’ with a quarter sized dollop to your hair, comb it, and pile into a loose bun or a style that isn’t too restricting…put your favorite sleeping shirt on and hop in bed you’ll thank me in the morning! (I’d recommend placing a towel over your pillow or sleeping in a soft shower cap)

3. No Shaving Cream Necessary – instead of wasting precious beauty time scanning the array of shaving creams lining the shelves of your local Wally World, I have another solution for you. Yep you guessed it! COCONUT OIL in place of conventional shaving cream, no more stinky smelling hair removal products, or expensive cocktails of chemicals ; whip out your new faithful (instead of old faithful, remember this is new to me/us LOL!). Works amazingly well for a nice clean shave on legs and underarms, leaves your stems hydrated and smelling oh so yummy!

4. Burn Baby Burrrrn – I know this stuff has got you all tingly inside, but I’m not done yet! So we all know that obesity is currently one of the biggest health problems in the world, and what you eat and how you work out plays a big part in all of that. One interesting feature is that coconut oil can reduce your hunger, you read this right I said COCONUT OIL CAN REDUCE YOUR HUNGER! Be sure to do your own research as this is an oil based product.

5. Power Boost – ok so far we know that it’s anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and last but not least anti-viral sounds like we are totally on to something here folks! The oil contains a special acid that can break down bacteria and create a hostile environment for viruses (that’s a darn good thing). Coconut oil can be used as your natural fuel source when you’re sick, take 1 TBSP of coconut oil 3x daily when sick along with mom’s chicken noodle soup of course!

Feel free to comment or share your coconut oil experiences with us here at Lavish Life, we’d love to hear from you!

Until next time,

Five things your Massage Therapist needs you to know

Five things your Massage Therapist needs you to know

1.       The Shower is your friend – We know this may seems like common sense to most, but it happens. It can be very distracting and stomach upsetting to massage a client with bad hygiene. It is not only important to shower for obvious hygiene reasons but it will also help increase circulation and put you in a relaxing state prior to getting on the table.

2.       No Phones Allowed - On a massage table is not the best place to be texting your boss about your last assignment, or making plans with friends for the weekend. You came to me to relax and get away from all of that remember! We understand you want to capture that perfect selfie and brag about how pampered you’re being to your Instagram followers. But seriously, how do you possibly expect to be relaxed with your thumbs moving a hundred miles an hour on your phone?

3.       I really don’t care if your legs look like Scruff McGruff or not – Ladies, this one is for you. I can’t tell you how many times I hear “please excuse my hairy legs, I didn’t have time to shave” and then they immediately tense up the second I undrape one leg.  Our job is to reduce the tension in your body, to work on the knots built up in your back, neck, and shoulders, and be sure you are as relaxed as possible while I am doing so. Believe it or not, that is a lot of work to do within an hour or two of time. Things like “I need to be sure to prescribe her a stretching routine” are more likely going through my mind then the fuzz on your legs.

4.       Take it off - I understand the misconception that there is a connection between sex and massage therapy. There are individuals out there misrepresenting Massage Therapist and offering sexual favors instead of therapeutic massage. However, check out my reviews and it is clear that I am not one of them! Those individuals are not a part of our profession and should be put away!  I need a client to feel comfortable enough with me to be able to fully undress for their session. If you are complaining about lower back pain and you are wearing underwear that prevents me from reaching your entire lumbar region, you may leave with the same lower back pain you came in with. I am always concerned with my client’s modesty, so under NO circumstances am I reaching underneath your underwear. Moral of the story JUST TAKE IT OFF!

5.       Relax, I got this - On the table your job is to relax, mine is to do all of the work. If I lift your head and ask you to relax it in my hand to knead your neck and shoulders, DO EXACTLY THAT. Don’t try to hold your head up the entire time. I highly doubt your head is to heavy for me. Nothing about that is relaxing, not to mention you are straining your neck the entire time and reversing all of the hard work I just did.

Crochet Braids and All the RAGE (Natural Hair, Braid Styles)

I’m sure you have all noticed those fabulous Naturalista’s taking the world by storm. They are everywhere! Strutting around town with their curly dos and rocking their fabulous protective styles. I must admit it does thrill me to see so many beautiful women embracing their roots and accepting themselves for who they are. As beautiful as this entire movement is the decision to go natural not only takes courage but a drastic change in your hair care routine. Many say they spend more than double the amount of time with their natural hair than they did with relaxed manes. As a Naturalista myself I confess that my hair demands much more of my attention than it did two years ago. The secret to my madness …protective styles! Specifically my signature crochet braids that I and many of my clients can’t seem to get enough of.

It is critical to these flawless chicks to keep their manes in tip top shape and protective styling play’s a huge part. Crochet braids allows them to do so while still wearing some natural looks similar to their own hair. Now I am not referring to those wormy like braids our mothers and grandmothers put in our hair as children (How dreadful where those things). This is the new and improved version. The style that allows you to get Senegalese Twists and Box Braids in less than half of the time, Kinky curly looks similar to your own look but fuller, and much more.

Crochet Braids are meant to be a 100% protective style which consists of cornrowing you natural hair and crocheting in your hair of choice. This eliminates the need for you to tamper with your natural hair and allows it to grow while taking a break from the washing, combing, heat, and any other usual maintenance required. While the hair underneath needs little to no maintenance it is important that it is thoroughly washed, conditioned, and moisturized prior to braiding it down and crocheting in your hair of choice. In order for protective style to work you have to be sure the hair underneath is protected.

Well what are you waiting for? Run along and install your choice of this gorgeous protective style and let us know what you think. Also, sends us pics of an of you other favorite protective styles you have been obsessed with lately.

Until next time,
